Education

The NEES lab at the University of Nevada is committed to educating students and involving them with our many laboratory projects.   We provide undergraduate research opportunities for college-aged students and we also host summer camps to expose younger students to the concepts of earthquake engineering.   Our goal is to educate the public on the importance of earthquake engineering research and provide the opportunity for anyone to come see our amazing earthquake simulation facilities.

2009 Research Experience for Undergraduates

REU Students visit NEES@UTexas' Thumper working with the USGS in Reno

This year, three students will attend the University of Nevada, Reno from June 1 – August 8 and conduct undergraduate research at the Large Scale Structures Laboratory.   We will have two civil engineering students and one computer science student.    One civil engineering student will help the analyze data from the recent   Straw Bale House test, while the other will research the effect of curvature on large bridge structures for our upcoming curved bridge research project.   The computer science student will generate a three-dimensional rendering of our structures lab and create a digital "fly through" of the facility.   At the end of their 10-week stay at UNR, each student will write a technical paper and present their research results at a Young Researcher's Symposium in Buffalo, NY.

In addition to their research, the students will participate in networking activities and take several field trips.   The most exciting travel opportunity will be to the NEES Annual Meeting from June 23 – 25 in Honolulu, HI.   There, the students will meet other REU participants, university faculty, professionals, and graduate students.   They will also take part in technical writing workshops and get an introduction to graduate school.   Finally, the students will tour the University of Hawaii, and they take a beach erosion tour (with potential for swimming and snorkeling).    While in Reno, students will participate in cohort activities with other undergraduate research students, and they will also participate in online classes and discussions.   It should be an exciting summer for our REU students and we can't wait for them to get here!

The College of Engineering is hosting summer camps for students beginning June 22 and ending July 26.   The summer camps are one week long and focus on hands-on activities and projects, such as: building & testing bridges, blasting bottle rockets, building a robot, designing a digital video game, touring our campus, using our labs, field trips, and more.   All camps run Monday thru Friday from 9:00am – 3:00 pm.   The registration fee per camp is $250 (financial assistance and scholarships are available).

The Introduction to Engineering camp (designed for students ages 12-14) will take place June 22 – 26, July 13 – 17, and July 27 – 31.

A specialized Civil Engineering camp (designed for students ages 14-17) will occur July 6 – 10 and July 20 – 24.
