Outreach
The staff at the Large Scales Structures Laboratory enjoys connecting with visitors worldwide to share our ideas, facilities, and research. We offer tours of the laboratory to all ages and we would be happy to host your group. Tours can be arranged weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To schedule a tour, contact Kelly Lyttle at (775) 784-4223 or at kellylyttle@unr.edu.

Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
On March 18, 2010, many high school students attended the Northern California/ Western Nevada Jr. Science Symposium at the University of Nevada, Reno for a conference to hear lectures from top scientists and other students about science and engineering.
During their first day at Nevada, the students participated in many tours and activities across campus. Ten students chose to participate in a hands-on activity utilizing the mini shake table at the Large Scale Structures Laboratory. The students were asked to brace a building made from popsicle sticks that would resist the Kobe Earthquake simulated by the shake table. Each group was given a budget and the winner was the team that constructed a safe building for the least amount of money.

EERI Lecture Series

Tongji Visit
On April 29, 2009, ten visitors from Tongji University near Shanghai, China visited the Large Scale Structures Laboratory at UNR. The purpose of this visit was to share information about the laboratory, its facilities, and recent research projects. In addition, the visitors shared their plans for a new Bridge Research Laboratory at Tongji University. The presentations given by the faculty at UNR can be downloaded below.
- "Introduction to the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES)," Sherif Elfass, Ph.D., P.E., Site Operations Manager
-
"Overview of Recently Completed Research Projects in the Large-Scale Structures Laboratory," M. Saiid Saiidi, Director, Office of UG Research and Professor
- "Multiple Shake Table Research Laboratory At the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) Large Scale Structures Laboratory (LSSL)," Patrick N. Laplace, Ph.D., Laboratory Manager

Engineer's Day
Each year, the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada hosts Engineer's Day, where students from all over Northern Nevada and Northern California tour the Nevada campus and facilities. On April 6th, 2010, nearly 400 7th -12th grade students visited UNR, and small groups of students visited five different demonstrations during a 2-hour tour. One of the stops on the tour was the Large Scale Structures Laboratory, and a demonstration of our miniature shake table was given. This year marked the 8th anniversary of this program, and it should continue for years to come.
