NEES Staff and Student Training

  • Laboratory Safety Training
On June 16, 2009 the laboratory staff will host a mandatory laboratory safety training for all personnel working in the Large Scale Structures Laboratory.  The training will be held at 1:00 p.m. in HREL 106.  All REU students, current graduate students, and faculty working in the lab must attend.

  • UCSD Accreditation Workshop
On April 6-7, 2009, the University of California at San Diego hosted a workshop to discuss the accreditation process for shake table sites. The shake table at UCSD has been accredited for over one year, and they hosted faculty and staff from several of the NEES sites. Employees from International Accreditation Services (IAS) gave presentations about the importance, benefits, and costs of national accreditation. The workshop attendees also visited the UCSD shaketable site to get a better understanding of how they maintain their accreditation.

  • Google Sketch Up Student Training
On March 27, 2009, NEES and the EERI student chapter co-hosted computer training software for the program Google Sketch Up. A UNR alumni taught the course to about thirty graduate students.

Google Sketch Up is a free three-dimensional visualization tool that can help students visualize their research specimens in the Large Scale Structures Laboratory. The program is interesting because it is very simple to make complex objects. In addition, there is a 3D warehouse. This online repository of 3D models allows you to download tons of pre-made objects, including buildings, bridges, furnishings, plants, people, and vehicles. The free version works well for simple applications, although you cannot create a digital “fly-through” of your work. However, educational versions can be obtained for students using this software for educational purposes.
